Why do married couples sleep in separate beds?

Out of curiousity... My employer and her husband have two boys together (3 year old and a 4 month old) and she has 3 older kids from a previous marriage. They have completely different bedrooms and rarely share a bed. The baby sleeps with her and the 3 year old sleeps with him. Other couples who have different rooms, why do you do things that way?
